One of the most common arguments in many cultures is alcoholism, it can cause serious problems to the family.

As the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence discusses the following are some of the ways in which problem drinking affects family members, employers, and colleagues, fellow students, and others, such as neglect of important duties; needing time to nurse hangovers; encountering legal problems; the inability to stop at will.

The Family is always the side of the society most affected because of the alcoholism in one or both members of the couple, but specifically, the kids, who are getting all the time severe consequences of any argument in front of them, related to father or mother who abuses of alcohol.

In my experience as a healthcare provider in other countries, I observed how families get destroyed, because of alcohol. For example, a couple married for 14 years get divorced after several arguments, all of them after the father has been back home in a bad emotional and physical condition, after drinking. The couple made arguments all the time, they love each other however the alcohol-impaired the cognitive and physical capabilities of one of them, in this case, the father, who always talked in a loud voice, and showed violent behavior after he drunk.

Many arguments about drinking, such as money problems, staying out late, were the complaints of the wife, and the several consequences of that situation came over the twins, who became alcoholic abusers, too with just 19 years old. The family started getting isolated from other siblings or friends trying to hide the situation. The father had a false argument that his wife was cheating him, something wrong because she was always at home taking care of the kids and the house, so he had a false conclusion from an invalid argument.

If that couple were able by themselves to seek help or receive family therapy, they will resolve the situation and avoid the divorce and the consequences to the kids.

Research shows that the most effective way to help someone with a substance use problem who may be at risk for developing a substance use disorder is to intervene early before the condition can progress so as a healthcare provider I think that the community, the family doctor and the alcoholic’s anonymous groups could help a couple to avoid bad consequences. Offering counseling and other support services we can prevent, treat, and restore the family’s functionality.
