Research Paper Assignment
What: You must analyze a Maryland historic site not discussed substantively in class, using our critical toolset to explore the subject’s implications for understanding issues of memory and public history related to slavery and the state’s development. Your thesis should explain why this project is important to understanding the contours of race and slavery in Maryland history and how the project will explore its topic. You do not need to choose a former plantation, although you certainly can. Any historic site that addresses issues relevant to slavery-era Maryland society is acceptable.
All papers should:
1)Offer a history of the individuals and/or events central to the site
2)Provide a narrative of how / when / why the site became opened (or remained closed) to the public
3)Analyze the site’s strategies in conveying the past to the public
4)Connect the site to themes and materials from the course
5)Assess the overall significance of the site to our understanding of race and slavery in Maryland and the nation at large.
How: By making use of substantial primary and secondary source research, drawing on course readings, and making connections to course materials, you will situate your topic in the broader framework of the issues raised in our course.
Sources: Primary and secondary sources are required for this project. Analysis of primary sources is essential: papers should show your skill in probing historical material (whether that is a newspaper article, a novel, poetry, advertisements, a memoir, etc.) for insights into your topic and its relationship to the broader themes of public history and memory. Secondary sources should: 1) provide the basic timeline for your site’s existence and evolution; 2) help situate your project in historical context; and 3) provide analytical frameworks to think about how your site engages with the past and with the public. A minimum of four scholarly secondary sources is required
Final papers should be approximately 10 pages (2800 to 3100 words) in length, typed, and double-spaced. All papers must cite outside sources, using Chicago Style, Notes-Bibliography format.
