Once sound of a particular frequency and waveform enters the ear, it sets up active patterns on the basilar membrane. It is assumed that the brain usually deals with sound waves in a similar manner it deals with visual patters on the eye’s retina. If a pattern is repeated several times, the brain learns to recognize it. However, a person’s brain usually learns the pattern itself.
