This assignment will highlight the importance of maintaining a multicultural perspective as a group leader. Knowledge about the backgrounds of your group members is critical to be culturally competent. The textbook addresses some aspects of this on pages 453-459 and supplemental information from the authors Corey and Corey will also be provided in class to address key points. The NASW (National Association Social Work) also provides standards for cultural competent practice. Connection of these standards to leading a group will be needed. Supplemental research will be needed on a specific culture of your choice. Your paper should address the following:
1. Specific steps the group leader can take to manage diversity in a group; Reference Jacobs and Schimmel and Corey and Corey’s information. Other referenced can be used here.

2. Research studies that have shown the best methods to manage diversity in a group setting.
3. Identify your own cultural background, economic status, values, and belief systems and how these will affect your leadership ability with clients that may be from similar or different backgrounds. (African American woman, age 27, mid-class, Christian, educated background, two parent home raised, no kids, and works multiple jobs). This is my information to use.
4. Review the NASW standards for cultural competent practice. Identify these and explain how a social worker leading a group will need to uphold these standards.
5. Research one specific population/culture you know nothing about. (This can be gangs, asian community, or any other culture) Highlight some overall facts about them. Specifically identify 3 key cultural beliefs/practices that they have that a group leader must know to avoid causing harm to a group member from this population/culture. This paper will be at least five pgs., double-spaced, Time New Roman, 12 font, APA style with at least five references.
