Journal #13: Note: The examples of resumes and cover letters (particularly in the latter portion of the chapter), along with the general advice given for conducting a job search, will be invaluable to you as you prepare you resume and cover letter assignment.
Note: Substantive journals will consist of two full pages in standard manuscript format (see syllabus). If you have done the reading and considered the prompts below, you should have plenty to say.
1. What is a “network of contact,” what does it consist of, and how important is it to build one? How important would an internship be in your particular major or field? What advice to BC have in regard to identifying an appropriate job?
2. What are the essential elements in an “elevator pitch,” and what would yours be if you had to write one? (Hint: write one now!) What kind of person do you have in mind that you would want to prepare your elevator pitch for?
3. How does the text encourage you to go about “analyzing yourself?” Why is it important to regard yourself “as a product or service”? Have you ever taken a personality test? How does your particular personality, work experience, and other interests suit you for the type of position and career you envision for yourself at the present time? How might your personality type or deficiencies in other areas make it harder for you to find a good fit, and how can you correct problematic areas in the time you have remaining at Robert Morris University?
4. Pp. 564-566: What are the resources the text suggests you should consult at the outset of your job search, and which do you believe will be most crucial to the success of your search? Do you have a LinkedIn profile? Has it helped you so far in any way?
5. What are the documents you will need for your job search? What are the essential elements of a resume? Why is it so important to include an objective? What are the stylistic and visual elements that are important to organizing your resume? What are the different kinds of layouts, and which are best suited for you at this stage in your career? Which layouts do you envision using only later on? Why is it important to use action verbs and “write impersonally and consistently”?
