Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin Book Review

Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin Book Review Fall 2018 Book Reviews VS Book Reports A book review should not be confused with a book report. The purpose of a book review is not merely to restate or to summarize the contents of the book in question. Rather, as the term “review” implies, the idea is to evaluate and to critique the author’s work. The reviewer is assessing the author’s purpose/thesis, technique, and overall thematic development. Which gets us to Franklin. In order to accomplish this assessment, the reviewer must provide information on Franklin’s organization and logic. But, unlike a book report, description alone is not sufficient. The book’s contents must be evaluated in regard to logical questions about Franklin’s goals, methods, and results. For example, following a brief introduction which identifies the author, title, subject, and significance of the work, the reviewer should ask the question, “Does this work have a clear and readily understood purpose?” From this question other questions follow: • What is the purpose? • Does Franklin have more than one purpose? Does it shift from section to section? • Is this purpose  implicit or explicit? • What is the significance of this purpose? Next, having established why Franklin expended time, paper pulp, and ink, the reviewer must address the heart of the review: “How does Franklin go about achieving his purpose?” Again, from this central question other questions follow: • What points does Franklin make to achieve this purpose? • In your opinion, do his points, when taken together, lead to logical conclusions? • Why does Franklin utilize these points? Finally, having addressed and evaluated the basic purpose(s) of the book, a summary conclusion will provide your reader with a synopsis of your assessment. At this point you should also evaluate Franklin’s style and readability. In other words, don’t hesitate to tell me what you think—as long as you can support your conclusions with evidence from the text (no ad hominem attacks!). Then, having written the definitive book review of the decade, you should curse your professor and go to bed! Technical Details: -Use parenthetical notes to cite all ideas, quotes, facts, etc. which are not your own. -The best papers use textual evidence to support their arguments. -All papers must be typed and double spaced, with one inch margins. -All papers must be on time. -Do not write in the first person. -Be sure to check grammar! It matters as much as content. -Paper should be 2-4 pages. Please do not go over 4 pages, unless you have something REALLY important to add.it is a college level essay, for a history 130 class
