In this assignment, you are required to compare two different countries and the geographical impacts of the broader scale changes that are occurring.
(My preferred countries are Costa Rica and Mexico)
Latin America is undergoing profound political and economic change at the outset of the 21st century, but it is playing out in very different ways around the region. You may choose countries like Colombia and Mexico that have not been so quick to embrace the anti-globalization stance now common throughout the region and how one of them compares to more aggressively transforming countries like Venezuela or Bolivia. I suggest that you select 2 countries that are of most interest to you as I’m sure they will have quite a bit to discuss. You must choose at least two themes to use as a basis for comparison. Themes discussed in your text are perfectly acceptable but feel free to discuss themes not discussed in the book.
A few themes areas that you should focus on:
-the political/economic stance of leaders, i.e. what they say they are going to do
-social programs implemented
-urban v. rural differences
-changes in agricultural regions (products grown, exported, imported)
-types of employment (where and what types of jobs are being created)
-neighborhood change (where and what types of change are occurring; poor vs. rich areas)
-role of tourism/different types of tourism and where its growing most rapidly
-the role of sport, music or any other type of culture (food, clothing, etc)
– and any others you may come across
You can find info from country websites, newspapers, guide books, videos, and academic articles.
The final paper must be AT LEAST 5 pages, not including bibliography.
