CJUS 3610 FORMAT FOR REACTION PAPERS

Your reaction paper will be based on the video and articles on “The Execution of 14-year old George Stinney” There is one video and one article for this assignment.  After watching the video and reading the article, follow the directions below to write your reaction paper.  Grading will be based on the information below

General Information:

The reaction papers must be typed (double-spaced) and should be at least four pages and no longer than six pages.

A cover page is required with your name, course name (CJUS 3610D) and date on it.

The paper will be attached to a message sent to your professor via the Message Link titled My Completed Practical Exercise. (submitting informant below).

Five (5) points will be deducted for everyday the paper is late.

I will not accept any papers by any other means.

Five points will be deducted for failing to put your name on the submitted assignment.

Reaction or response papers are usually requested by teachers so that you’ll consider carefully what you think or feel about something you’ve read. The following guidelines are intended to be used for reacting to a reading although they could easily be used for reactions to films too. Read whatever you’ve been asked to respond to, and while reading, think about the following questions.

Consider and attempt to answer the following questions in your paper.

How do you feel about what you watched and what have you learned from the article?

Did the video and article bother or annoy you? Why or why not?

What did you realize as a result of watching the video and reading the article?

What questions does the video and article raise for you about our criminal justice system?

When considering what you watched on the video and learned from the article, what would you like to see change in our criminal justice system?

Why do you feel public outcry did not take place in this case until later?

What in the video and article do you agree and disagree with?

What realizations have you made and have they changed you in any way after viewing the video and reading the article?

In your eyes, what would be the best way to evaluate the story?

George Junius Stinney Jr. was, at age 14, the youngest person executed in the United States in the 20th century (1944) The boy was very small for his age (5’1) so small, they had to stack books on the electric chair.

Because there is literally NO EVIDENCE AGAINST HIM (accused of murdering two white girls) …the question of Stinney’s guilt and the judicial process leading to his execution remain controversial (ie. there’s a strong possibility they executed an INNOCENT person)

“The lack of any physical evidence or archived police and court records is the reason South Carolina attorney Steve McKenzie, who detailed Stinney’s story to TheGrio, said he wants to re-open the case of the execution George Junius Stinney, Jr. McKenzie said he believes Stinney was innocent of the murder and with “no investigative notes, no trial transcripts, no written confession, and nothing to indicate guilt,” it is clear Stinney’s trial and subsequent execution were suspicious at best and a miscarriage of justice at worst.
