Rules for Debate: Each debater is expected to deliver a constructive speech during their assigned 3 minute period based on research they do on the topic and to help in the rebuttal period (during this time, the speaker is not interrupted, they deliver a 3 min monologue). The moderator (the instructor) grants the right to speak by introducing a debater. Once he or she has the floor, a debater is obliged to surrender it only when ordered to do so by the moderator. Usually, this occurs only after a serious breach of the rules or when the debater has exceeded his or her allotted time. Each debater has a chance to prepare his/her own constructive speech and the teams should coordinate to make sure that their points are additive rather than repetitive in nature to allow for the best argument to be made. Rebuttal speeches will be made to the best of everyone’s ability based on the points covered by the other team members. During the rebuttal, specific points being addressed should be identified so that it is clear what is being refuted. At this time, the teams are free to go back and forth freely between each other to address the points. Deliverable and Grading: Pre-Debate Survey (25 Points) – Each student will complete a short survey. Debate Paper (75 Points) – Each student will submit a written summary of his/her research on the assigned issue. The paper will be graded on content, composition, proper citations and needs to address the following points: At the beginning, you will need to state what topic and position (affirmative or negative) you have been assigned and whether you initially agreed or disagreed with this  point of view on the issue. In the body of your paper, you will need to present at least five (5) sources that you used to learn more about the topic when you were doing research, along with a short summary of what this source’s position was on the issue (a one-paragraph summarizing each source and its full citation in a bibliography section of your document [APA format preferred]). Alternatively, you can write a paper using these 5 sources where you integrate the findings together into one story. In closing, please reflect on what you learned as a result of this assignment AND whether you have changed your initial position on this issue as a result of your research. Oral Debate (75 Points) – Each student will prepare and deliver their 3- minute speech on the assigned date. In addition, the students as a team will participate in the rebuttal speeches and answer any questions. The students will be graded on content and delivery of their assigned 3- minute speeches and on the overall team performance in coordinating their speeches and rebuttal performance. The debates will be done synchronously using the Conference Feature of Canvas (all people using video conferencing at the same time) and will be scheduled for each team to accommodate schedules. Post-Debate Survey (25 Points) – Each student will complete a short survey to reflect
