This assignment (Part 2 of 4) seeks to help you properly focus and plan your study. The research paper proposal should adhere to the following: Typewritten double spaced format in a scholarly writing style, free from errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, diction, and English usage.Times New Roman 12-point font, one-inch marginsUse parenthetical citations and author-date references, not footnotes. Follow the Chicago/Turabian style manual. (Rubric lists Turabian, but should include Chicago style).Total 4-6 written pages, plus cover page and references. For this initial research paper proposal, you should target 8 total sources, at least 5 peer-reviewed. Your research paper proposal will relate to the research paper topic you selected in week 3. The research paper proposal should include the following sections: 1. INTRODUCTION:Introduce the issue you will investigate. Include the purpose for your research.2. RESEARCH QUESTION:What is the specific research question that your study will address? This question intends to get you to the heart of the matter on a particular issue. You must be able to develop a research question that does not have a yes/no or fact-based answer. For example: What conditions influenced the operational effectiveness of Operation X? Trefry Library provides resources to help you develop a research question.Describe the significance of the problem. For example, what knowledge will your research create? What gaps in our knowledge will it help fill? How will your findings help improve existing policy or procedures? This is where you explain the “so what” of your work.3. PRELIMINARY REVIEWED SOURCES: Provide a preliminary list of literature you have reviewed for this study. State their significance and how they relate to the main argument.Note: Graduate-level study requires peer-reviewed material (go to the following link for a quick overview of What does “peer reviewed” mean? The Trefry Library can help you with Open Web and Deep Web Searching. If you are not sure about the reliability of a source, there is a resource that can help you evaluate the sources you find. You can use the CRAAP test (see this library link for Evaluating Information – Applying the CRAAP Test). 4. EVALUATION METHODS: In this section, you should discuss the methods or criteria that you intend to use to evaluate the case. There are multiple possible ways to evaluate the cases (e.g., case study analysis, process tracing, comparative analysis, SWOT analysis, cost-benefit analysis, stakeholder analysis, etc.). Important: Graduate-level studies are usually “framed” by a theoretical framework. For example, let’s say your research question is: “How did different ethical frameworks assess whether Operation Iraqi Freedom met the criteria of a just war?” You could focus your literature review on “Iraqi Freedom”, “ethical frameworks”, and “just war theory”. You could find multiple just war theorists. Then you could select one (e.g., Waltzer) and use that theorist’s theory to frame your own study of Operation Iraqi Freedom. For the final paper you will NOT have enough time to use your theoretical framework to frame an interview guide or survey, but you WILL have sufficient time to use your theoretical framework to organize and draw conclusions on the literature you have gathered. 5. REFERENCES: Your citations and references should be in accordance with the Chicago/Turabian Style Manual. You can find additional guidance on the Chicago/Turabian Style Manual in the Reference section of the Trefry Library website. |
